Description

This is a dovecote located southwest of Columbary House, dating from the 17th century. It features a timber frame with brick nogging set on a dressed limestone plinth. The southwest front is constructed of red brick with limestone quoins and a lias plinth also with limestone quoins. The roof is made of stone tiles and has gabled ends.

The dovecote has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 30 feet by 15 feet, divided internally by a cross-wall. The exterior displays a square-panel box frame, with the northeast back wall consisting of eight panels wide and four panels tall, while the end walls are four panels wide. The southwest front is made of red brick with limestone quoins. There are two doorways: one on the northeast elevation to the left of center and another on the northwest end wall, both featuring plank doors. The lantern is missing.

Inside, there are two cells separated by a central partition that is open to the roof. The interior is lined with nesting holes, with brick lining and ledges under the holes on the southwest and end walls, and wooden nesting boxes on the northeast wall and the central partition wall. The structure has a tie-beam-and-collar truss with intermediate collars and birds-mouth joints to the through purlins, and the common-rafter couples are intact. The potences are missing.
