Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church that dates from the 12th century, with later additions from the late 14th and 15th centuries. It is constructed of rendered sandstone ashlar, features a timber-framed tower with lath and plaster infill, and has a tile roof. The church includes a west tower, nave, and chancel that are unified, along with a north porch.

The tower, built in the 15th century, has three stages and features a window at each level, with a louvred opening to the belfry in the gable. The first and second stages of the tower have curved tension braces, and the gable is supported by two queen struts to the collar. The north and south walls of the tower are close-studded. The nave and chancel consist of four bays, with walls that date back to the 12th century. The north wall includes a 15th-century timber-framed porch, with a door that has a semicircular head and roll moulding, and windows with two trefoil-headed lights under square heads. The south wall mirrors this design with a corresponding entrance. The east window features three lights with Y-tracery under a two-centred head.

Inside, the division between the nave and chancel is marked by a plastered truss. The tower arch has a segmental head, and the upper part of the jambs is moulded, indicating it was once a window. Notable fittings include early 17th-century altar rails, a sanctuary floor made of late 15th-century Malvern School tiles, grained late 18th-century box pews, and a font with a moulded octagonal bowl from the 14th century.

This church remains largely untouched by Victorian restoration.
