Description

Mabs Cottage is a house that possibly dates back to the 15th century, with extensions from the 17th century, mid-19th century alterations, and a restoration around 1930 by Miss Matley-Moore. It features a timber frame on a brick plinth, with some brick and rendered infill, and is partially clad in brick with a tiled roof. The building is L-shaped, consisting of two bays of a cruck hall house that extend south, featuring a large external stack on the south gable, which was formerly the central truss of the hall. The other limb extends west and includes two framed bays from the 17th century, with an intervening stack.

On the north front, the house is one storey high with a gable-lit attic. There is a two-light 19th-century casement window in the cruck gable to the left, and the roof above is hipped, while the rest of the front is blind. The entrance is located to the left, accessed through a 20th-century glazed porch with a lean-to roof and a glazed door. The framing of the 17th-century part consists of three square panels high with straight tension braces on the west gable. The truss has two collars and multiple queen struts. The cruck on the south gable features arched braces below the collar, indicating that it was the central truss of an open hall.
