Description

This building, likely originally two houses, is now two shops with flats above. It dates to approximately 1800, constructed in two phases with later additions and alterations, including shop fronts dating to around 1980-95. The construction utilizes pinkish-brown brick on the left-hand side, reddish-brown brick on the right, a plain tile roof to the left, and a slate roof to the right. A renewed brick ridge stack is centrally positioned on the left, and a brick party-wall stack is located on the right.

The left-hand house has a double-depth plan with a staircase between the front and rear rooms. The exterior is three storeys high and features two plus two first-floor windows. The first floor has eight-over-eight sash windows; the second floor has four-over-four sashes; and the ground floor has an eight-over-eight sash window on the left. All windows are set in near-flush frames with flat arches of gauged brick, with those on the left painted and all windows having sills. A modillion eaves band is present. The entrance on the left has a part-glazed door, with lower panels that are flush-beaded, a blind fanlight, and an arched surround. There is a shop front with plate-glass windows and a renewed Victorian-style surround; canted into the entrance. To the right, a part-glazed door with overlight is incorporated, leading to a continuous shop front which includes a six-panel door, a part-glazed shop door with overlight, two plate-glass windows, a pilastered surround, and a frieze in a Victorian style.

Internally, the left-hand house retains its original winder staircase, along with some original joinery including four-panel doors.
