Description

18 and 20 Silver Street is a former Worcester Infirmary, now serving as a shop and an attached building. It was constructed in 1745, with later additions and alterations including the stuccoing of the front facade and shop front in the late 19th century, mid-20th century re-roofing, and renovations to the shop front around the 1980s. The front facade is stucco over brick, while the left return features pinkish-red brick. The building has a corrugated asbestos roof, and the rear range is made of pinkish-red brick with some timber-framing and a plain tile roof.

The plan is a truncated U-shape with infill at the rear. The main range is two storeys high, featuring five first-floor windows on one side and four on the other. The first floor has casement windows in near-flush metal frames. The ground floor includes a central entrance with a six-raised-and-fielded-panel door set in a fluted architrave, adorned with lion masks at the corners, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice. The shop fronts have end pilasters, with doorways topped by upshots and a continuous frieze, featuring plate-glass windows and glazed entrances. The rear range has two storeys and an attic, with three first-floor windows and square panels of timber framing on the gable end. There are remains of sash and casement windows, while the ground floor has boarded openings.

Inside, the front part of the building features an axial beam with an ovolo chamfer on the left side and three transverse chamfered beams on the right side. Historically, the Worcester Royal Infirmary first opened in this building around 1745.
