Description
The Dyson Perrins memorial is a chest tomb located about 30 metres west of the Church of St John the Baptist in Claines, Worcester. It dates from the mid-19th century and is made of white marble set on a pink granite base, designed in the Gothic style. The tomb features a moulded plinth and flat capping, which is adorned with an ivy leaf frieze and a cross with foliage decoration at each end of the arms.
The corners of the tomb have piers, and there is a central pilaster on the long sides, each with two pointed arched, cusped, recessed panels. The inscription panels are also recessed behind cusped two-centred arches, with foliated relief work in the spandrels. The north-east side panels commemorate Sarah Dyson Perrins, who died in 1855, and William Perrins, who died in 1867. The south-west left panel commemorates James Dyson Perrins, who died in 1887, while the right panel is blank. The west end panel commemorates Judith Perrins, who died in 1865, and the east end panel commemorates Alice Mary Dyson Perrins, who died in 1860.
William Perrins, along with his partner John Wheeley Lea, founded the Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce Company, which was first marketed in 1840 and brought significant wealth to both families. William Perrins married Sarah Dyson in 1823, and their grandson, Charles William Dyson Perrins, who lived from 1864 to 1958, used this inherited wealth to build an impressive collection of Early Worcester Porcelain and Illuminated Manuscripts.
