Description

This barn, located about 20 yards south-west of Astwood Hill Farmhouse, dates from the 17th century and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century. It is constructed with a timber frame featuring brick infill, replacement walling, and additions, resting on a sandstone base, topped with a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped at the south-west end. The barn consists of three fully framed bays plus one additional bay aligned north-east to south-west. The wagon bay, which is the second from the south-west end, has opposing cart entries with double doors and a hipped roof on the south-east elevation.

The framing showcases aisled construction with two rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate on the sides and four panels at the gable ends. The lower corners feature long straight braces. The south-west gable end has a truncated collar and tie-beam truss with a central strut and raking struts in the lower corners. The north-east gable end has a collar and tie-beam truss with two collars, four struts to the lower collar, and two to the upper collar. The south-east elevation includes three irregularly sized windows. The north-east gable end features a stable door flanked by windows, all with cambered heads, and a loft door above.

Inside, the three-bay fully framed section contains two intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts, a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts between bays three and four, two tiers of purlins, and arch-braced aisle posts. The north-east bay is floored. Note that Astwood Hill Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
