Description

A barn, probably dating from around 1700 with 18th-century additions, is located about 30 yards south of Callow Hill Farmhouse. The barn has been converted into two dwellings. It is timber-framed with brick infill, a brick plinth, some weatherboarding, and plain tiled roofs. The building follows an L-shaped layout with the main section consisting of five bays aligned east/west. The central bay features a wagon opening with cart entrances and a gabled midstrey facing south. Additional bays were built later, and a two-bay return was added to the west side, with the northernmost bay including a wagon opening and cart entrances. Parts of the barn are two stories high and feature diaper ventilation patterns. The timber framing is arranged with three panels from the sill to the wall plate, incorporating long straight braces to the corners. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses in the original and present end bays, and intermediate trusses with raking struts. Two tiers of trenched purlins are also present. During a survey in June 1985, the elevations were undergoing alteration. The barn incorporates reused timbers dating from around 1500, possibly including the central truss of a medieval hall. This truss retains evidence of a former mantel beam, along with chamfers on posts and the tie-beam. The barn also features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
