Description

The former coach house to Pensax Court is a building from the mid-19th century that was extended in the late 19th century and converted in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick with some timber-framing and rendered infill, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey with an attic featuring dormers.

The main west elevation consists of roughly five bays. The first four bays from the north end have square-headed archways set on brick piers, which feature chamfered timber lintels and have multi-paned windows inserted. Above the three intermediate piers are large timber brackets resting on stone corbels, which originally supported a canopy. The fifth bay at the south end has a row of timber-framed panels at eaves level and a pair of half-glazed doors that serve as the main entrance. Above the second bay is a dormer with a raking top and a three-light window, and there is a skylight above the fourth and fifth bays.

The south gable end also features a row of panels at eaves level, along with a collar and tie-beam truss that has decorative struts. This elevation includes a three-light window on the ground floor and an attic light. At the north gable end, there is a late 19th-century addition with two levels; the upper level has blocked header ventilation courses and two bays with two blind rectangular lights on the west elevation. Additionally, there is a loft door with a cambered head in the north gable end, two loopholes above, and a winch with a pitched roof. The building is part of a group that includes Pensax Court and is included for its group value.
