Description

Severn End is a country house that was rebuilt after a fire in 1896, designed to replicate the original house from the 16th and 17th centuries, with possible medieval remains. It incorporates some late 17th century additions that survived the fire. The structure features timber-framing and brick with tile roofs, forming a main range on the west side of a courtyard, with wings enclosing the north and south sides. The house is two storeys high with attics.

The west front, which faces the garden, is almost symmetrical and constructed of timber-framing. It has a central section with three gabled bays, two jetties, and a central doorway with a timber surround. Each side has one-bay links leading to outer gabled wings that are closely studded and feature attic dormers. There are chimneys on the left and right with diagonal shafts. The east side, facing the courtyard, is also symmetrical with three gabled bays. On either side of the central bay, which contains the doorway, are chimneys with clustered shafts. The north and south wings, begun in 1673, are made of brick and each has three shaped gables, with the central gable featuring a segmental pediment and the outer ones having triangular pediments. The north wing survived the fire in nearly complete condition.

Inside, the north wing is said to contain a 17th century staircase and a plaster ceiling. The central range of the house includes late 19th century woodwork, including overmantels, and the dining room ceiling is plastered in an Elizabethan style.

Historical records from Sir Nicholas Lechmere's diaries document building work at Severn End, including the construction of the wing in 1673. The house is reputed to be the location of Brinkley Court in the Wooster Novels by P.G. Wodehouse.
