Description
The Vineyard Barn is a Grade II listed barn, possibly dating from 1658, located in Hanley Castle, near Severn End. The structure features timber-framing and brick construction with a tiled roof, and it stands two storeys high. The barn is framed in square panels, although much of the ground floor has been replaced by brick. On the ground floor, there are two doorways with a window on each side of the right-hand doorway. The first floor has two openings. Originally, the barn extended further to the east.
Inside, the west gable truss and the next truss to the east include tie-beams, collars, and raking struts. The following two trusses have principals connected by a collar with V-struts, along with raking struts extending from the jointed heads of the principal posts to a ground floor ceiling beam. Historical records, specifically the diary of Sir Nicholas Lechmere, mention the construction of a great barn at Severn End in 1658.
