Description
The stable block, located about 70 yards east of Stanford Court, dates from the mid-18th century and has been altered in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick and features a plain tiled hipped roof, forming a U-plan structure. The building is two storeys high and has a modillion eaves cornice.
The main south front consists of 15 bays arranged in a 7:1:7 pattern, with the central bay projecting forward and topped with a gable. There is a blocked round-headed archway that has been fitted with a 20th-century door, along with a 3-light casement window on the first floor and a circular opening in the gable apex adorned with radiating glazing bars. The flanking seven bays contain round-headed archways on the ground floor, some of which have been blocked or altered, and 9-pane sash windows on the first floor, featuring gauged flat heads and ashlar keyblocks. It appears that every alternate window is a 20th-century insertion.
The north returns at each end of the south front originally had a similar design and consist of five bays. The yard within has been roofed and altered, but its elevations were also arranged similarly to the external ones. The building is included for its group value. A close inspection was not possible during the last resurvey in April 1985.
