Description

STANFORD WITH ORLETON CP STANFORD BRIDGE SO 76 NW

6/187 Stable block about 70 yards east of Stanford Court

GV II

Stable block, now factory. Mid-C18 with mid-C20 alterations. Brick with plain tiled hipped roof. U-plan. Two storeys with modillion eaves cornice. Main south front: 7:1:7 bays; central bay breaks forward and is gabled; blocked round-headed archway with inserted C20 door; 3-light first floor casement and circular opening in gable apex with radiating glazing bars. Flanking seven bays have round-headed archways on the ground floor (some of which are either blocked or otherwise altered) and 9-pane sashes on the first floor with gauged flat heads and ashlar keyblocks; (every alternate window is apparently a C20 insertion). The north returns at each end of the south front are of five bays and were originally of similar design. The yard within has now been roofed and altered but the elevations were also of similar arrangement to the external ones. Included for group value. Close inspection not possible at time of resurvey (April 1985).
