Description
The Shrubbery is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a plain tiled roof, which is partly hipped with a parapet at the south gable end and large end stacks. The building is designed in an L-plan and has two storeys, an attic with dormers, and a cellar. It has a chamfered plinth, a three-course band between the main storeys, and a dentilled eaves cornice.
The main south elevation consists of four bays with a 1:4 window arrangement. The windows have cambered heads, with the four-bay section featuring two ground and first-floor windows that have moulded architraves and 12-pane sashes in the two bays to the left. The third bay has a similar window on the ground floor, with the jambs lengthened to incorporate a small door beneath it. The fourth bay has a ground and first-floor 3-light casement window. The fifth bay projects a south wing with two bays, and there is a 3-light cellar window in the gable end. Additionally, there is a ground and first-floor 3-light casement and a 6-panelled door with a cambered head at the angle with the main part of the house.
At the rear, there are two flat-roofed dormer windows on the main part. There are also two single-storey 19th-century wings to the rear left. The main entrance is located on the east side of the inner wing, featuring a round-headed archway with an ashlar keyblock and imposts, leading into a small lobby with a 3-panelled door on the left side. The house was part of the Winnington Estate, and the garden served as the kitchen garden for Stanford Court.
