Description

Stanford Court is a house set in a landscaped park, currently used as offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and was partly rebuilt between 1886 and 1888 after a fire, with further alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with some areas faced in ashlar and features ashlar dressings. It has plain tiled hipped roofs with groups of large, mainly star-shaped ridge stacks. The layout is U-shaped, with the north elevation being the only surviving part from the 18th century, while the south range, which has projecting wings, is from the late 19th century.

The house has two storeys and a cellar, with a chamfered plinth and a combination of moulded and dentilled eaves cornices. The south entrance elevation has a layout of 2:6:2 bays, with quoin strips on the projecting wings. The windows have moulded stone architraves and are all plain sashes. The entrance doors are located in the two central bays; the left door has an inserted plain sash, while the right door features a panelled design and a large transom light. The side elevation windows have gauged flat heads with ashlar keyblocks and sills.

The north elevation consists of 6:1:6 bays, with a full-height semi-circular bay window projection in the central bay, flanked by giant pilasters. The main bay divisions have plain sash windows, except for the second bay, which contains a 4-panelled door with a square light above it, and the ground floor of the twelfth and thirteenth bays, which are blind. The central bay has three large plain sashes.

Inside, the interior is mainly from the 19th century. The hall at the rear center features semi-circular-headed arcading on two sides on both floors, along with a large elaborately carved chimneypiece and an open well staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. The ceilings throughout are ornately moulded, and there is a good marble fireplace as well as a panelled timber fireplace located to the west of the ground floor.
