Description
The barn and stables, located about 30 yards north-east of Court Farmhouse, were built in 1832 and have undergone later alterations and additions. Constructed of brick, the building features partly hipped roofs made of slate, corrugated iron, and asbestos, arranged in an L-plan. The barn consists of seven bays aligned north to south, with the second and fifth wagon bays from the south gable end having opposed cart entries topped with basket-arched heads. It includes header ventilation courses, diaper ventilation patterns, and a modillion eaves cornice. The date "1832" is inscribed in blue headers at the south gable end.
Inside, the barn has intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts and two tiers of trenched purlins. The stable, which projects from the north end of the west side elevation, has two levels and also features a modillion eaves cornice, with header ventilation courses on the upper level. The stable consists of three bays plus an additional three bays. The south elevation includes a door and a ground floor window with cambered heads on the left, as well as two loft openings. A diaper ventilation pattern is present in the apex of the west gable end.
There is a single-storey, two-bay addition at the west gable end that is not included in the listing. A large mid-20th century covered yard has been constructed in the angle between the two ranges, obscuring their main elevations. The barn and stables are situated to the south of the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew and form a group with Court Farmhouse, the granary, and the hop kilns and malt house.
