Description
Brook Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, that likely dates from the late 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 19th century. The building is timber-framed, featuring sections of painted brick and rendered wattle-and-daub infill, along with brick replacement walling. It has tiled roofs and a sandstone ashlar chimney with four diagonal brick shafts. The main range consists of two bays and includes a baffle entry, with a two-bay cross-wing at the west gable end. The exterior primarily displays large square panels, with five panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, and close-set vertical studs above the doorway. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic.
On the front elevation, the main range features two ground floor and two first floor casements that are regularly spaced, along with a central planked doorway. The cross-wing includes 20th-century metal garage doors and a first floor casement. Inside, the roof has queen strut trusses, with an intermediate raking strut truss in the cross-wing and single, trenched purlins. There are back-to-back fireplaces in two ground floor rooms of the main range, with the fireplace on the west side previously containing a bread oven. A first floor room to the west of the main range showcases moulded plasterwork at the edges of the ceiling, and the main beams have parallel mouldings that are stopped by tongue. A late 19th-century outshut is present at the rear.
