Description

First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War.

MATERIALS: Portland stone.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands in a prominent roadside location beside the Callow End Club within a small hedged and railed garden. The memorial comprises a hooded Botonee cross with a gently tapering octagonal shaft with a two-tier square plinth and single-stepped base.

The main inscription in incised and black-painted lettering on the upper tier of the plinth reads TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (19 NAMES). A further inscription on the lower tier of the plinth reads ALSO OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE 1939 – 45 WAR/ (5 NAMES).
