Description

Prior's Court is a house dating from the late 16th century, which was restored between 1898 and 1899. It features timber framing with some brick infill and a tiled roof, built around a small courtyard measuring approximately 4 by 5 metres. The house has two storeys and an attic. The entrance front, located on the north side, consists of three gabled bays with irregular framing and iron casement windows. The left-hand bay on the ground floor has two slightly curved tension braces. The trusses include vertical struts between the tie-beams and collars.

In the middle bay, there is a single-storey porch with gables facing three directions, supported by turned posts that resemble crude Tuscan columns. The oak doorway features two large panels with applied ovals and an iron Y-knocker. To the left of the second gable, there is a chimney with two diagonal shafts. The east wall has two gables, and under the left-hand gable, there is a moulded rail at first floor level, above which is a tripartite sash window with glazing bars. A projecting stack against the rear (south) wall has a plaque inscribed 'AG' and two star-plan shafts.

Inside, the doorway from the courtyard into the south range leads into a cross-passage that is partly open to the main living room on the west side. This room is partly lined with re-set oak raised and fielded panelling that includes some 17th-century fragments. A wide 17th-century oak stair rises within this room, featuring two flights at right angles, a closed string, turned balusters, newels with ball finials, and a moulded handrail. The parlour to the east has a wide fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and a chamfered bressummer. The ground floor rooms have chamfered ceiling beams that appear to be contemporary with the walls. A bedroom on the north-west side of the house contains a fireplace with a carved surround that includes some 17th-century work and a 16th-century linen-fold panel.
