Description

First World War memorial, unveiled in 1921, with later addition for the Second World War.

DESCRIPTION The memorial is prominently sited at a road junction and is carved from Portland stone. It consists of a small Latin cross on a tapering octagonal shaft which is set upon a square plinth and a three-stepped octagonal base. The main inscription is on the front (north) panel of the plinth and reads:

IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ TO THOSE OF/ HAZELBURY BRYAN/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR/ KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918.

The opposite panel is inscribed: THE CARE OF THEM/ IS WITH THE MOST HIGH/ 1939-1945/ (NAMES)/ AND SUBSEQUENTLY/ (NAME).

The two other sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the fallen from the First World War.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES It is enclosed by painted metal railings and a metal gate.
