Description
Bonners Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 17th century, with some later alterations. It features timber-framing, although much of it has been replaced by brick, and has a tiled roof. The building is one storey with an attic.
The right side of the facade consists of two bays with three exposed principal posts. The left bay has a window under the eaves and a very small window to the right. The right bay includes a French window leading to the upper storey, which is partly within a dormer and accessed by cast iron steps and a balcony. The left part of the facade has a window with a segmental head situated between two doorways, along with an attic dormer. The doorways are topped with tiled gabled canopies, with the right-hand doorway leading to a glazed porch. There are chimneys to the right of the left-hand doorway and on the rear wall to the right. One of the clay ridge tiles features an attached finial, which is now partly broken but may have once represented a bird. The right gable wall displays exposed framing in square panels, with vertical struts connecting the tie-beam and collar.
The interior was not fully accessible during the survey in May 1986, but it is reported to have smoke-blackened purlins, suggesting that parts of the house may be older than the 17th century, although this contradicts other visible evidence.
