Description

Hanley Castle High School, specifically the western block, is a school that was formerly a grammar school. It dates back to the 17th century and has undergone some alterations over the years. The building features a combination of brick and timber-framing with a tiled roof and stands two storeys high. One gable faces north-west, where the ground floor is built on a brick underbase and includes a window. To the left, there is a doorway and a window with a stone surround. The first floor showcases close-studded timber framing with a middle rail, featuring a central window and a smaller window to the left. Between the tie-beam and collar of the truss, there are vertical struts, and above them, V-struts can be seen.

On the south-west side, which faces the churchyard, there are three parallel gables. The outer gables are made of brick but painted to look like timber-framing. The right-hand gable includes a truss with struts between the tie-beam and collar. The middle gabled section is framed in irregular square panels and contains one window on the ground floor, two on the first floor, and an additional window between the tie-beam and collar of the truss that lights the attic.

Adjoining the south-east side is a lower brick range that features a dog-tooth course at the eaves. Its south-west wall is mostly blank, except for two windows towards the right that have segmental heads. There is also a carved stone plaque with a Latin inscription, which was illegible at the time of survey in June 1986. The building is reputed to be the Grammar School mentioned in P.G. Wodehouse's book, "Right Ho Jeeves."
