Description
Nos 1-5 Pytts Cottages are eight almshouses that have been divided into five houses. They were founded in 1716 by the will of Anne Pytts and have undergone mid-20th century alterations. The cottages are constructed from handmade brick with plain tiled roofs, featuring gable-end parapets and brick stacks at the rear. The layout is U-shaped, with a single storey and an attic that has gabled dormers and a three-course band at the attic storey level. All openings have gauged flat heads.
On the main north-west elevation, the ground floor windows are the original wooden mullion and transom style. The central range includes four windows and four doorways, which have moulded architraves and 20th-century doors, two of which are partly glazed. Above the central two doors and windows is a painted timber pediment that features a circular motif enclosing three shields and the word "SALOP". Each wing has a ground floor window and a leaded attic light at the gable ends, with an additional brick band of two courses above the attic light. There are also blocked doorways at both angles of the central range. At the rear of the central range, there are additional service wings.
The almshouses were established to provide housing for eight widows selected from Kyre Parish and the seven surrounding parishes.
