Description

The Grove is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century, mid-19th century, and late 20th century. It is built of brick on a brick and rubble base, topped with a plain tiled roof featuring gable-end parapets and a partly rebuilt brick ridge stack. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and an attic, with a dentilled eaves cornice. It has four bays, with the central two bays slightly projecting and topped by a shaped gable. All windows have cambered heads and feature Gothick traceried 2-light casements. The central gable includes a circular opening with a quatrefoil-shaped window. The entrance features a doorway with a two-centred head and a half-glazed door, with an arched head above that is also glazed and has two glazing bars. Access to the entrance is via a flight of eight sandstone steps. There are attic lights at the gable ends, a truncated chimney stack, and a lean-to outshut on the left end. At the rear, there is a tall central wing that contains the main staircase, along with a substantial wing to the rear right that combines timber-framing and brick, which has been significantly altered and restored in the 20th century. Inside, there is a large central fireplace and a surviving winder staircase in the stair wing.
