Description

The Harrison Almshouses are a group of almshouses built in 1640, constructed from brick with an old tile roof, arranged in a U-shape with coped gable ends. They are a single storey with brick dentil eaves. The front facing the road features tall flanking chimneys and a central gabled porch that has moulded brick coping and remnants of a brick finial. The porch contains a central three-centred arched opening that is moulded and splayed, topped with a moulded brick pediment and a carved stone date panel in the gable. On either side of the porch, there are three bays of three-light leaded casements set in wooden frames.

In the courtyard created by the projecting wings on the south-east side, the doors and windows have been altered. The wings are connected by a brick wall that includes a central gateway with a brick pediment aligned with the main door. Six tall chimneys rise at regular intervals along the outer walls to the east and west.

Inside, the almshouses feature original brick fireplaces and old ledged doors. The courtroom located to the right of the entrance has a contemporary panelled dado and a screen leading to the passage, characterized by heavy moulded stiles and tails, small rectangular panels, and two arched doorways with small key blocks. These doorways originally included dog-gates, which are now boarded over. The almshouses underwent renovations by the Trustees in 1966.
