Description
The Old Granary is a mid-17th century barn located on Holt Heath, near Holt. Originally situated about 18 yards south of Hollingshead Farmhouse, it now sits back from the B 4196 road. The barn is timber-framed, with some areas painted, other areas rendered brick infill, a sandstone rubble and brick plinth, and tiled roofs. It has five bays, with a central wagon bay featuring cart entries and a midstrey on the north-west elevation. The timber framing is arranged in two panels from sill to wall-plate, with the lower panels being rectangular and the upper panels square. Long straight braces are visible in the lower corners, and the trusses have queen struts to the collar and a king-post above the collar in the gable ends. The brick plinth at the gable ends incorporates ventilation slits. There are double-planked doors to the midstrey, a planked door to the right side, and a timber-framed outshut to the left side, featuring a planked door and a rectangular light.
Inside, the roof has four intermediate raking strut trusses and double, trenched purlins. The barn is floored throughout. There are two lean-to extensions at the rear.
