Description
Westfield is a pair of cottages that have been combined into one house. They date from the early 18th century and were enlarged in the mid-18th century. The building features part timber framing with painted brick infill on a brick plinth, along with some brick replacement walling. The roof is partially covered with brick tiles and has brick end stacks.
The house is two storeys and consists of two sections. The timber-framed section on the left has two framed bays with irregularly sized panels, mainly three from the sill to the wall-plate. The front elevation includes two ground floor casement windows, three first floor casement windows, and a planked door located in the left bay, which is set within a gabled, timber-framed porch on a brick plinth. The brick section on the right has two ground floor casement windows with cambered heads, two first floor casement windows, and part-glazed double doors to the right, also featuring a cambered head.
Inside, the older part of the building has single, trenched purlins and an intermediate queen strut truss. There is an outshut at the rear of the older section and a 20th-century extension at the rear of the later section. Originally, these cottages belonged to the Earl of Dudley and served as the private coal wharf for the Witley Court estate. One half was occupied by the carter, while the other half was for the coal wharf caretaker. The original blue brick wharf beside the river has been grassed over and is not included in the listing.
