Description
Carthouse Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, originally known as Old Mill House. It features a projecting cross-wing and a former hall range that was rebuilt around 1970. The structure has a timber-framed cross-wing with brick infill, a prominent sandstone base to the stack, and a brick rebuilt range, all topped with tiled roofs. The former hall has a cross-wing that is aligned north/south, while the rebuilt range extends to the east. There is an external stack on the west return of the cross-wing and a resited entry in the rebuilt range.
The cottage is single storey with an attic, and the falling ground to the east provides an extra storey to the end of the rebuilt range. It features 20th-century fenestration throughout, including glazing bar windows, one in the attic, and a range of windows on the gable end of the cross-wing. There are also two dormers in the rebuilt range with a gable at the end bay, and a similar arrangement of windows. The central range has a 20th-century door with a side light.
The framing of the cottage is fairly intact, with three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, angle bracing in the top panels, and V-struts in the gable.
