Description

This is a mid-19th century group of buildings consisting of two houses, Holyrood House and The Tudor, originally known as Newbie House and Holyrood House, and linked by a bridge. The complex was formerly the water cure establishment of Dr Gully, built around 1842.

The left-hand building, Holyrood House, is rendered and has two storeys with two stepped gables, featuring finials and a string cornice. It has two rectangular bays with windows of ten lights on both floors, the upper ones arched, with carved bases. A smaller, set-back central section contains two windows of a similar size with rectangular dripmoulds. A string course runs between the floors, and an arched doorway is located to the right of the facade. A verandah extends along the left side. The bridge connecting the two houses is asymmetrical, with a roof of moulded tiles.

The Tudor, on the right-hand side, is a two-storey building with a tall basement constructed from red brick. It has three moulded gables, with two smaller gables to the right which project forward. Each of the three larger gables contains an attic window of four lights above a full-height bay with windows of ten lights, above a basement window of two lights. The two smaller gables have a window of four lights above a door and a gabled porch respectively. A battlemented section is present to the left, and a turret with round-headed paired lights and a cupola tops the structure.
