Description

The gate piers and gates located to the northwest and the second set of gate piers to the southeast of the garden enclosure, approximately 30 meters north of Hillhouse Farmhouse, date from the mid-18th century. These features are constructed from coursed and dressed red sandstone ashlar. The northwest pair of gate piers are tall and rusticated, topped with moulded stone capping, and one of the original ovoid finials is still in place. The wrought iron gates are likely acquired from Witley Court. The second set of piers is similar in design but lacks rustication and features stone steps leading up to a later segmental brick arch that connects the two piers, along with a later wooden gate. The gate piers to the northwest are believed to have been part of the former gateway to an earlier house that stood north of the current farmhouse.
