Description

The Lydiate is a house dating from approximately 1760, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of finely jointed red brick with hipped plain tiled roofs, featuring fishscale tile banding behind the front parapet, and brick end stacks. The house is three storeys high with an attic, and has five bays. The central three bays are wider and topped by a large pediment supported on consoles. All windows have rusticated lintels with moulded keyblocks. The ground floor windows are multi-paned, 20th century replacements that extend to ground level and have transom lights divided by two glazing bars. The first floor has five 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has six-pane sashes. A keyed oculus sits within the pediment. The central doorcase, likely dating from the late 18th century, has a shallow open pediment, entablature and pilasters, panelled reveals and soffit, a part-glazed 20th century door, and a barred segmental fanlight. The interior plan has been altered, with a new staircase inserted. Two ornate timber fireplaces remain, featuring fluted Ionic columns, swags, and carved panels; one originally located on the front right of the ground floor has been moved to a room at the rear left, now separated by a new partition. It is believed the house occupies the site of a 16th-century building.
