Description
This building, known as Nos 1 and 3 Red Lion Street and including No 2 Bear Hill, is a house that has been converted into two houses and a shop. It dates back to the 15th century and was underbuilt in the mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The structure is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, topped with a tile roof. It has an H-plan layout, with a hall range running north to south and a cross-wing to the south (No 2 Bear Hill) that is likely from the same period. The north cross-wing is secondary but still from the 15th century. Originally, the hall was open but is now accessed via a baffle-entry at the south end.
On the east front, the building features projecting cross-wings, all of which are two storeys high and have a window arrangement of 1 + 1 + 1. The windows are 3-light casements, with the left-hand cross-wing having a 2-light casement under a segmental head and a blocked doorway. The hall range has an entrance to the left with a wooden lintel and a 20th-century door, a roughly central 3-light casement, and a fixed casement to the right. The right-hand cross-wing features a 20th-century door to the left and a 3-light casement to the right, all under a timber lintel. The framing includes close-studding on the first floor, and both cross-wings were jettied, with the right cross-wing displaying curved tension braces. The interior is reported to have exposed timber-framing, including chamfered and stopped ceiling beams.
