Description

Nos 24, 26, and 28 Bear Hill is a house that has been divided into three separate homes. Originally built in the 15th century, it was remodeled in the mid-18th century, partly rebuilt in the late 19th century, and has seen some alterations in the late 20th century. The structure is timber-framed and clad in painted and rendered brick.

The south front features two storeys with an attic in the gabled cross-wing on the left (No 28), which is lit by a three-light casement window. There are three windows on this level: a three-light casement on the left under a segmental head, and two two-light casements. On the ground floor, there are three three-light casements, with the leftmost one also under a segmental head. The entrance to No 28 is to the right of the left-hand window, featuring a wooden architrave under a segmental head and a 20th-century panelled door. The entrances to Nos 24 and 26 are located between the other two windows, each with a plain wooden architrave and a 20th-century half-glazed door.

Inside, the roofs of Nos 24 and 26 are smoke-blackened, indicating that there was a smoke bay at the eastern end, allowing smoke to permeate through the roof. The central truss features two raking struts, while the other two trusses have two struts to the collar and trenched purlins. The side wall of the cross-wing exposed in No 26 showcases curved angle braces connecting the wall-post to the wall-plate.
