Description
This is a timber-frame house, originally built in the 15th century, with significant alterations and additions spanning the 16th, 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It now comprises three houses and a shop. The original design featured two framed bays aligned north to south. The northern bay was initially an open hall, with a through-passage at its north end; the service bay associated with the hall is no longer present. A large stack was inserted in the hall, with its rear facing the through-passage.
The street front is two stories high with a three-window and one-window configuration. Windows are predominantly 2- and 3-light casements. A 19th-century gabled brick addition to the right contains a shop front on the ground floor. Ground floor windows are 3-light casements, and entrances to numbers 6 and 8 are situated between the windows and feature wooden architraves with 20th-century doors. Close-studding survives on the first floor of the timber frame.
Internally, the northern truss is visible, featuring an arch-braced tie-beam with two struts to the collar, a yoke just below the ridge, and trenched purlins. The intermediate hall truss exhibits an arch-braced collar with wattle-and-daub infill. Significant traces of smoke-blackening are visible on the roof. The ceiling of the room above the hall displays a late 17th-century decorative design, which is slightly damaged. Number 2 is located at the rear, as part of a 17th-century extension.
