Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in 1862 by F Preedy, with a tower added in 1903 by W H Bidlake. The church features a nave, a south aisle, a chancel, and a central tower. It is constructed of polychromatic brickwork with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The south aisle consists of three bays separated by stepped buttresses, with an entrance on the left that is slightly advanced and topped by a gable. This entrance has a two-centred arch with engaged respond shafts, and there is one window in each bay featuring two trefoiled lights under two-centred heads. The chancel has two bays with lancet windows, and the east window contains three trefoiled lights under a two-centred head. The 1903 tower rises in two stages above the aisle, with the first stage featuring a two-light window under a two-centred head. The belfry stage has a pair of large open two-light windows with two-centred heads and multiple engaged shafts on each side. An octagonal stair turret on the north-east corner has a conical stone roof, and the roof is gabled north to south, topped by a fleche. Inside, the church showcases polychromatic brickwork and a three-bay arcade in the south aisle made of brick on stone columns. At the crossing, there are two-centred arches in all directions with respond shafts. The massive tower serves as a prominent landmark in the mostly flat landscape surrounding Wythall.
