Description
No. 1 George Street is a house that has been converted into an office. It was built in the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations since then. The building is made of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall, with a symmetrical three-window facade.
The exterior includes a plaster plinth, ground and first-floor sill bands, and a top cornice with modillions. The ground floor windows are late 19th-century tripartite sashes, set beneath stepped brick flat arches that cut through the sill band. The first-floor windows feature stepped plaster lintels with fluted keys above 16-pane sashes, flanking a 12-pane sash. The second-floor windows have rubbed brick flat arches over 8-pane sashes, flanking a 6-pane sash.
The central entrance is round-headed and has a Tuscan aedicule, with fluted entablature blocks that include oval paterae, an open pediment, a fanlight with radial glazing bars, and a six-panel door. A gable-end stack is present, and the rear of the building has two gabled wings. Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters.
