Description

A group of four houses, now offices, dating from the late 18th century, situated on George Street. The buildings are constructed of brick with stone dressings and have a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, arranged in two symmetrical pairs with shared central entrances. The three-storey facade features a six-window range, with a first-floor sill band and a top cornice. The ground floor has canted bay windows with cornices. The windows to numbers 4 and 5 have 8-pane and 12-pane sashes respectively; the first-floor windows of numbers 2 and 3 have stepped plaster lintels with a fluted keystone over 4-pane sashes, while numbers 4 and 5 have 16-pane, 12-pane, and 16-pane sashes. The central windows of each house are narrower, and the second-floor windows have 8-pane sashes to numbers 2 and 3, and 8-pane, 4-pane, 6-pane sashes to numbers 4 and 5, flanking the central window. The round-headed central entrances have Doric aedicules with fluted capitals to numbers 4 and 5, open pediments, fanlights with radial glazing bars, and 6-panel doors. A cross-axial stack is present. The rear of the building features gabled wings. Internally, the houses retain stick-baluster staircases.
