Description
The Big House is a house that has been converted into offices, built in the early 18th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan and presents a symmetrical facade with three storeys and five bays, accented by chamfered quoins. The windows are boxed sashes with glazing bars, set beneath stone lintels with keystones. There is a band above each storey and a moulded eaves cornice. The entrance door consists of eight raised and fielded panels with panelled reveals, framed by a timber doorcase featuring reeded engaged columns and a swan-necked pediment, which is topped with an additional open triangular pediment. Inside the pediment, it is inscribed with "AD 1705". At the rear of the building, some windows have elliptical brick arches.
Inside, the principal ground floor rooms each have an exposed ceiling beam. The right-hand front room includes an inglenook fireplace with a re-used timber bressummer and panelled jambs, now fitted with a cast iron hob grate that has Adamesque decoration. The open-well staircase features an open string, three turned balusters on each tread, and a ramped and wreathed handrail. Most of the interior doors are raised and fielded panels, and on the second floor, there are two panelled doors dating from around 1700.
