Description
The Oldbury Cenotaph is a tall memorial made of Cornish granite, located on a paved area in front of the former Town Hall and opposite 2 Halesowen Street. The structure features a pylon that rises from a rectangular five-stepped base and tapers at the top to form an empty tomb. This tomb is designed as a tapered Classical chest, adorned with hemispherical bosses.
On the east face of the cenotaph, there is an inscription in applied bronze letters that reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ OLDBURY/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WARS/ 1914-1918/ AND/ 1939-1945/ AND IN/ ALL OTHER/ CONFLICTS." A wreath is carved in low relief at the base of the pylon. The west face features a similar inscription in applied bronze letters: "AT THE/ GOING DOWN/ OF THE SUN/ AND IN THE/ MORNING WE WILL/ REMEMBER THEM," accompanied by a matching wreath carved below. Both the northern and southern faces of the cenotaph display a plain equal-armed cross carved in relief on each side.
