Description
No. 1 Church Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone some later alterations. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a plain-tile roof, brick dentilled eaves, and coped gables. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has a three-window range that includes an 8-pane sash window on either side of a wooden mullion and transom window. The windows are topped with projecting flat arches that have keystones. The central entrance consists of a double 6-panelled door with a fanlight above, framed by an elaborate doorcase with pilasters that support sections of an entablature and a modillioned open pediment. On either side of the entrance are later square bay windows. There is a 20th-century window in the left attic gable and additional casements and a door at the rear, which features triple gables. Inside, the building is noted for its dog-leg staircase with turned balusters. This property is included for its group value.
