Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built between 1860 and 1861 and designed by architect G E Street, is located on St Johns Road in Stourbridge. It is constructed of sandstone with brick bands and dressings, featuring an unbroken slate roof. The church comprises a nave, aisles, a short chancel, and a porch on the north side. While there is no tower, there is a tall fleche on the roof, which was originally leaded. The nave showcases plate tracery throughout, with five cusped lancets and an "Early French" rose window at the west end, as well as circular clerestory windows. The chancel includes a five-light bay tracery east window. Inside, the nave arcades are adorned with vigorous stiff leaf capitals, and there is a marble tile reredos, stone sedilia, and original choir benches featuring intricately carved poppy heads. The original font is accompanied by an elaborately decorated ironwork cover. The stained glass is primarily from around 1919 and 1927.
