Description
Edward Road Baptist Church, built in 1899, is a striking example of the Birmingham terracotta school. The church features a nave with a clerestory and low aisles, along with transepts and a Sunday School attached to the rear. Constructed from hard red brick, it is adorned with lavish buff terracotta ornamentation and dressings, showcasing a style that blends Romanesque and Perpendicular architectural elements.
The north entrance front is marked by a broad shaped gable, flanked by turret-like buttresses capped with terracotta finialed openwork cupolas. Above the porch, there are two large, richly decorated Romanesque windows featuring quatrefoil tracery. A well-modeled angel in high relief embraces the central spandrel, while the gable above displays terracotta banding and a narrow central arch motif with cresting at the apex.
The projecting porch boasts a terracotta Romanesque portal, flanked by Perpendicular cupola-capped buttresses. These buttresses rise to support a gable that is compartmented with quatrefoils and features a large ogee finialed pinnacle. The side elevations, including the gable-ended school, are similarly decorated with terracotta ornamentation, finials, and buttress-turrets.
