Description

The Boer War Memorial in Cannon Hill Park is dedicated to the soldiers from Birmingham who lost their lives in the Boer War. Designed by Albert Toft, it was completed in 1906.

The memorial features a pink granite pedestal topped with a bronze sculpture and bronze plaques on its sides. The plinth has four buttresses, and the base has dished sides that create a bell-shaped profile, which also displays bronze plaques. This base transitions to support a large bronze sculptural group at the top of the monument.

At the front, the plaque depicts two kneeling, weeping figures representing Grief and Sympathy, positioned beside a cartouche with commemorative lettering in relief. The inscription reads: "TO / THE GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THE / SONS OF BIRMINGHAM / WHO FELL IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899-1902 / AND TO PERPETUATE / THE EXAMPLE OF ALL WHO / SERVED IN THE WAR / THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED / BY THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS." The names and ranks of the fallen are inscribed on plaques on the other three sides.

At the top of the memorial is a large bronze sculpture depicting rocky ground with a cannon flanked by two soldiers, symbolizing Courage and Endurance. Above the cannon stands the robed figure of Peace, who carries a shield displaying the city arms and an olive branch in her left arm, while her right hand holds a wreath.
