Description
The Boy Scouts War Memorial is located at the edge of Cannon Hill Park, specifically at the south-west end of Queen’s Ride, and is surrounded by a flowerbed with a path leading to its western face. This area is part of the Grade II* designated Cannon Hill Park, where Queen’s Ride was originally laid out as a riding track in 1897 and later modified in 1920 with the planting of an avenue of trees to honor fallen Scouts.
The memorial is a tall, triangular concrete obelisk that stands on a corniced block with scroll feet, which is itself positioned on a larger, tapering corniced pedestal featuring large scrolled feet. The entire structure rests on a polygonal base.
On the western face of the obelisk, there is a relief of the Toc H lantern, with an inscription below on the pedestal that reads "TO THE/ SCOUTS/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ AND THE/ WORLD WAR." The eastern face displays the Scout fleur-de-lis in relief, accompanied by the inscription "PRO PATRIA/ 1914 – 1918/ 1939 – 1945." The northern face features a rose in relief, and below this, the pedestal is adorned with the Scout fleur-de-lis along with a scroll that contains the inscription "BE PREPARED."
