Description
Cannon Hill House is a substantial, two-story villa dating from circa 1830-40. The house is stucco-faced with a five-bay north entrance front. The ground floor features channelled grooves struck into segmental arches, forming shallow recessed panels that contain the full-height sash windows. A moulded sill course runs along the first floor. The front is framed by quoin pilasters and a frieze set flush with the wall. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, with deep eaves and four pedimented dormers. Stucco corniced chimneys are present.
A large, double-columned porch in the Greek Doric style is located in the second bay from the right, featuring a deep, plain entablature. The double doors comprise eight moulded panels within an architrave case. Glazing bar sashes are found on both floors; those on the first floor have surrounds with friezes, cornices, and a small pediment above the porch. The west return front, of three bays, has similar detailing, with plaster strips dividing the first-floor window bays. The ground-floor windows on this return retain original louvred shutters. A plain red brick service wing extends to the side and rear of the main house. The grounds of the property now form part of Cannon Hill Park.
