Description

Kilmuir is a large house dating to 1909, built in the Birmingham Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed of fine quality brickwork, featuring purple headers and diapering. The house is two storeys with a symmetrical facade and gabled wings, incorporating tilework kneelers. It has steep gable end tiled roofs, a lofty ribbed shaft chimney stack to the left corner of the left gable wing, and similar stacks to the rear and side of the right-hand wing. Further fine groups of diagonally set stacks are positioned below the ridge above the entrance bay. A stairwell bay on the inner left corner features a timber-framed top storey with a framed gable. Leaded lights are set between the studs, returning to the side and across the central entrance bay below the eaves, creating a gallery-like effect. A pent roof vestibule is set below the entrance, with a projecting, timber-framed gabled porch. There are leaded 2 or 3-light casement windows and smaller lights at the foot of the stairwell bay. The shallower, right-hand gabled wing incorporates a shallow, two-storey canted bay with parapetted aprons and lead valance coping. The garden front is more symmetrical, with two gabled breaks containing shallow canted bays; otherwise, the fenestration is similar, with leaded, camber-arched French windows beneath a pent roof verandah between the breaks. The interior displays a restrained mixture of Arts and Crafts and classical mouldings, featuring good door furniture and window latches.
