Description
No. 20 Clarendon Road is a Gothic villa built around 1855-1860. It is a two-storey structure made of red brick, featuring engineering brick and stucco dressings. The design is asymmetrical, highlighted by a steeply gabled cross wing that has large pierced and fretted bargeboards, along with smaller plain bargeboards on a gable set back, which includes a small triangular oriel above a gabled porch. The cross wing has a canted bay with a two-light window on the first floor, divided by a colonette and adorned with ornately modeled leaf stops on the drip mould of a blind pointed arch. There is a spherical triangle attic light, and the roof is covered with slate and has overhanging eaves. The villa has a picturesque yet coarse design, showcasing a more expressive use of Gothic detail than is typical for houses of this style from the same period.
