Description

The entrance and offices with the Tropical Bird House and Tropical Lily House, located in the Botanical Gardens, date back to around 1840. The building is constructed of stucco and features a slate roof. It stands two storeys tall, with a canted end that is flanked by single-storey, slated lean-to lobbies towards the road and drive. The building has stucco chimney stacks with cornices. Inside the entrance passage, there is a Regency openwork iron arch supported by a single pilaster, which features a Greek key frieze. The passage leads to the Tropical Bird House, characterized by its chamfered timber columns, and further on to the Tropical Lily House. The Tropical Lily House contains iron columns with openwork that support roof beams and divide the room into three aisles. This house connects to the Palm House.
