Description

Garswood is a house built in the 1830s, located on Barkfield Lane in Formby. The building is made of stucco and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and features four bays, with a conservatory and a peacock house to the left, as well as a stable wing at the rear. The end bays project forward under gables and are accented with rusticated quoins. The house has a cornice and a blocking course, while the gables are finished with plain bargeboards.

The windows are sashed with architraves and lack glazing bars. The end bays have canted bay windows with casements on the ground floor, and the first-floor windows in the end bays are adorned with enriched friezes, cornices, and cartouches above. The entrance, located in the third bay, features a half-glazed doorcase and door. A cast iron verandah runs between the canted bay windows, supported by five twisted columns that hold up segmental arches, with enriched spandrels, a cornice, and cresting.

The house has two brick chimney stacks. The peacock house includes a gable and an entrance with an architrave and an enriched pediment. Flanking round-headed windows have archivolts, keys, and pediments. The stable wing is roughcast with stucco dressings, featuring an enriched frieze and cornice, timbered gablets over the first-floor windows, and a small turret with louvres and a small spire.
