Description
The Former Convent of Our Lady is a building located on School Lane in Formby, constructed as a Catholic chapel in 1688. It served as a barn from 1688 to 1796, then reverted to a chapel until 1864, after which it was converted into cottages and became a convent in 1930. The building is roughcast with slate roofs and has two storeys with three bays. The first bay features a low gabled wing, which has a corresponding wing at the rear. There is a drip mould on the first floor, raised over the windows, and the building has quoins and coped gables.
The ground floor windows are sashed with glazing bars, while the first floor has small-paned casements. The first bay wing includes three small sashed windows above the entrance. The left side of the building displays a plaque with the Blundell arms and the date 1688. The right side features a gabled porch with an entrance at the rear and a window above with a tripartite sash. There are two cross-axial stacks. It is reported that the building contains holy water stoups in the return porch and has a curved ceiling on the first floor.
