The Britannia Building Society

The Britannia Building Society, located at 7 Bennett's Hill and including No 37A Waterloo Street, is a mid to late 19th-century stone building. It stands two and a half storeys tall with a basement and features three bays on the ground and first floors, which are accentuated by pilasters with banded rustication. The entrance is situated on the corner of the building. Each of the ground and first floors has a blank bay and two arched windows with moulded surrounds, while the second floor includes a blank bay, a single window, and a couplet of windows, all framed by moulded eared surrounds and positioned between coupled pilasters. There are cornice bands at both the first and second floor levels, with the second floor cornice being bracketted. The moulded eaves cornice has intermittent brackets, and the building is topped with a balustraded parapet. The main entrance, accessed by steps, features a shell hood and is set within a pedimented doorcase. Above the entrance is an arched and pedimented window. The return on Waterloo Street is similarly designed and includes the entrance to No 37A Waterloo Street.
